Couples Prenatal Massage Class

Teaching Prenatal Massage to couples can be a rewarding experience, as it allows expectant parents to bond and learn new skills that can help them support each other during pregnancy and childbirth. Here are some tips for teaching prenatal massage to couples.

Encourage couples to communicate openly and honestly with each other about their needs and preferences during the massage.

Show couples how to perform various massage techniques, such as effleurage, petrissage, and gentle stretches, and allow them to practice on each other under your guidence.

Educate couples about the benefits of massage during pregnancy, such as reducing stress, improving sleep, and easing muscle aches and pains.

Create a relaxing atmosphere in your classroom and encourage couples to take breaks as needed and listen to their bodies.

Address any concerns or questions that couples may have about massage during pregnancy, such as contraindications and precautions.

Postnatal Massage

A Postnatal Massage is a therapeutic massage specifically designed for women in the weeks following childbirth. It supports physical recovery by helping the body return to its pre-pregnancy state – easing muscle soreness, reducing swelling, relieving back and shoulder tension, and improving circulation.

Massage stimulates circulation and lymphatic drainage, helping the body flush out excess fluids and reduce postpartum swelling in the legs, feet, and hands.

The body carries significant strain from pregnancy and delivery. Massage targets the back, shoulders, neck, and hips, releasing built-up tension and easing muscle soreness.

Massage triggers the release of serotonin and dopamine, lifting mood and reducing feelings of anxiety or the “baby blues” that many new mothers experience.

Deep relaxation from massage lowers cortisol levels, helping new mothers fall asleep faster and experience deeper, more restorative rest during an exhausting season.

Neck & Shoulder Massage

This is a type of massage that focuses on the muscles and tissues in the neck and shoulder region. This type of massage can be helpful for relieving tension, soreness, and stiffness in the neck and shoulders, and can also help to improve circulation and reduce stress. Here are some steps you can follow to give a neck and shoulder massage.

Have the person receiving the massage lie on their back or sit in a comfortable chair with their head and neck supported.

Apply a small amount of massage oil or lotion to your hands to help them glide over the skin.

Gently squeeze and knead the muscles on either side of the neck using your thumbs. You can also use circular motions or apply gentle pressure with the heels of your hands.

Massage the shoulders using circular motions or by applying gentle pressure with your fingertips. You can also use your thumbs to knead the muscles at the base of the neck and along the tops of the shoulders.

Gently stretch the neck and shoulders by holding onto the head and pulling it gently in different shoulders.

Benefits of a Prenatal Massage

A certified prenatal massage therapist uses positioning and techniques specifically designed for each trimester, making it a safe and effective part of prenatal care. Prenatal massage delivers four key benefits for expecting mothers:

  1. Reduces muscle tension and pain – The added weight of pregnancy strains the lower back, hips, and legs. Targeted massage work releases that tension and eases chronic discomfort.

  2. Improves circulation – Massage stimulates blood flow, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to both mother and baby while reducing swelling in the hands and feet.

  3. Lowers stress hormones – Regular sessions decrease cortisol levels and boost serotonin and dopamine, supporting a calmer, more stable mood throughout pregnancy.

  4. Promotes better sleep – The relaxation response triggered by massage helps expecting mothers fall asleep faster and achieve deeper, more restorative rest.
